Children of Lir

This artwork depicts a scene from Irish Folklore in a fascinating tale called ‘The Children of Lir’.

King Lir loved his four children: Fionula, Aed, Fiachea and Conn dearly. However his wife Aoife, was jealous fearing he loved his children better than her.

She enticed the children to the lake, and there cast a spell upon them, turning them into swans. Fionula retained her human voice asked in disbelief “what have you done to us?”.

Aoife answered “you will never come between your father and me again, you will remain upon this lake for three hundred years!”.

King Lir was inconsolable when he found out what happened. He commanded Bodb, the Kings magician to punish his wife, Aoife by transforming her into a moth.

Lir visited his children every day. He listened in grief to the beautiful but sad singing of the swans until old age took him from the world.

After three hundred years had passed, Lairgen the high prince of Munster seized and dragged the four swans ashore as a gift to his bride.

He prince ordered them to sign for his bride.  However to the horror of the onlookers, the swans snowy plumage fell away and there stood an aged woman and three withered old men.

A holy hermit saw that death was about to claim them, sprinkled each gentle head with holy water. He lay the four Children of Lir to rest at last.
