Saint Patrick

This artwork depicts a scene of Saint Patrick on the Hill of Slane after the lighting of the pascal fire. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.

His birth name is Maewyn Succat, he changed his name to Patrick after becoming a priest.

He brought Christianity to the people of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day is a national day of celebration in Ireland, held on the 17th of March.

Ireland hosts parades through the streets, dancing and music.  We offer a ‘Cead Mile Failte’ for the many visitors returning home for this special occasion.

There are many legendary tales involving Saint Patrick. One of these tales involves the lighting of the pascal fire on top of the Hill of Slane.

During ancient times, the Spring Equinox began by lighting a huge fire on top of the Hill of Tara. The High King Laoire declared that no other fires would be lit before this one.

In defiance of the High King Laoire, Saint Patrick lit a paschal fire on the hill of Slane in County Meath.

The fire from the Hill of Slane was visible from the Hill of Tara. King Laoire was impressed by Saint Patrick’s devotion, so he allowed him to continue his missionary work in Ireland.

The Hill of Slane remained a center of learning and religion for many centuries after Saint Patrick with a friary church and college.

The ruins of the friary church and college remain on top of the Hill of Slane.
