Oscar Wilde portrait

Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde (born 16th October 1854), was one of Ireland’s most renowned poets and playwrights. He became one of London’s most popular playwrights during the 1890s.

His father published books on archaeology and folklore. His mother was a poet and wrote Celtic mythology and folklore.

Oscar Wilde attended Trinity College in Dublin and Magdalen College in Oxford.

After graduation, he moved to London to live with his friend Frank Miles.

Wilde married Constance Lloyd in 1884. They had two sons and he became an editor of Woman’s World Magazine.

His stories, novels and controversy

He published two children’s stories, “The Happy Prince and Other Tales” and “The House of Pomegranates”.

Wilde later published his only novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. The novel’s Gothic and homoerotic content created much controversy.

Oscar produced several plays including “Lady Windermere’s Fan”, “A Woman of No Importance”, “An Ideal Husband” and “The Importance of Being Earnest”.

His works continued to cause controversy due to the homoerotic themes. Wilde became accused of homosexual acts, so he sued for criminal libel.

His final years

The evidence went against Wilde and he dropped the lawsuit and fled to France. Wilde was arrested again and found guilty. They sentenced him to two years of hard labour in prison.

After prison, Wilde spent his last three years exiled in France. He became ill and developed meningitis. Oscar Wilde died on 30th November 1900 and buried near Paris, France.
