Diarmuid and Grainne
Diarmuid and Grainne
After the death of his wife Manissa, Finn Mac Cumhail sought the hand of King Cormac Mac Art’s young and beautiful daughter, Grainne.
The King agreed to the match and invited Finn and his warriors to a feast in Tara.
But, when Grainne saw Finn, who was older than her own father, she felt nothing for him.
Instead Grainne was captivated by one of Finn’s warriors, a handsome young man named Diarmuid.
He returned her love but was torn between his desire for Grainne and his oath of honour to Finn.
The lovers ran away, pursued by Finn.
For sixteen years Diarmuid and Grainne traveled the length and breath of Ireland before finally settling down in Sligo with a son and daughter.
To make amends, Diarmuid invited Finn to join him in a wild boar hunt on the slopes of Ben Bulben.
During the hunt, the boar attacked Diarmuid, mortally wounding him. He implored Finn, who had the gift of healing to cure him.
Finn remembered how Diarmuid had stole Grainne from him, could not blot out his hatred and allowed Diarmuid to die.
