Granuaile Celtic Painting
Granuaile (Grace O’Malley), was an Irish pirate and politician born in 1530. Grace was daughter of the Irish chieftain Eoghan Ó Máille. The O’Malley’s were a wealthy family.
They owned territory around Clew Bay with several castles in the Westport and Louisburgh area including Clare Island.
Her father owned a fleet of ships for trading with France, Spain and Portugal. Grace commanded his fleet. She lived in Belclare Castle, a town which still remains today. Life in sixteenth century Ireland was violent and dangerous.
The chieftains regularly raided each others territories. Grace’s father refused to take her on a voyage because she was a girl. She cut her hair off and dressed as a boy.
This was how Grace got her name ‘Granuaile’ or ‘Gráinne Ní Mháille’ which means bald Grace in the Gaelic language.
From her castle, she could spot ships a long distance away, giving her time to launch boats to strip the ships of their cargo. At the time, pirates where common practice with Raleigh and Drake becoming rich from piracy.
Grace became the most successful pirate on Ireland’s western coast. Her power was so great that Queen Elizabeth agreed to meet Grace at Greenwich Castle, outside London in 1593.
This meeting was conducted in Latin. The story goes that during the meeting, one of the Queen’s ladies in waiting noticed that Grace needed a handkerchief.
She received a small one made of linen and lace. When Grace used it she threw it into the fire. She was told that she should have put it in her pocket.
Grace replied that the Irish had a higher standard of cleanliness, as they would never keep a soiled article. Grace died in the year 1603 at the age of 70.
