The Fall and Rise of Bacheth Celtic Painting
The Fall and Rise of Bacheth
This artwork represents a scene from a classic Irish tale of Folklore about a man called Bacheth.
Ireland’s tradition for hospitality goes back a long way in time, back to the days of King Cormac’s reign. No man was a greater example of this hospitality than Bacheth.
His was an open house and everyone was welcome. Bacheth had a foster daughter named Eithne whom he loved dearly. She had twelve brothers due to extravagance and wild living.
All too often they would visit Bacheth bringing their servants and cohorts with them. They spent their time eating, drinking and squandering Bacheth’s possessions.
Inevitably this brought ruin and forced him to sell his herds and move to a woodman’s hut. King Cormac happened to be riding in the district when he saw Eithne milking the one remaining cow that Bacheth had retained.
He observed that she skimmed the milk keeping only the cream. She then gathered the finest rushes by the riverside and waded into the middle of the stream to fill a pail with the purest water.
The King asked her who was the object of such great care. “I give the creamiest milk, the softest rushes and the purest water to my foster father”, she answered.
The King was impressed and persuaded Eithne into telling him the whole story of Bacheth’s sad downfall. A friendship developed between the King and Eithne and soon he sought her hand in marriage.
As a wedding gift Cormac restored Bacheth his former home and more wealth than he never known before.
Once again Bacheth kept an open house with storytelling, music, laughter and song. A tradition which is very much in evidence in Ireland to this present day.
